McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway

Highlights

Driving to Proxy Falls has a side benefit of driving one of the most scenic highways in Oregon. This particular scenic byway is not maintain in the winter time, so do check to find out whether it's open. There are many places to hike, see and camp aside from Proxy Falls. Below are some pictures just as hints to what the road can offer. In no way is it representative since I did not devote enough time to do justice.

Beginning of Highway 242 McKenzie Pass-Santiam Pass Scenic Byway. Note restriction to total vehicle+trailer length less than 35 ft Foliage along the highway interspersed with evergreens Most place in early October was not quite peak colors. The exception fortunately was Proxy Falls Trail.
View of Scott Lake picnic area. It was not wise of me to make the detour off the main road at the start of snow flurries without knowing the road condition, how long it would be, and whether it would be worth the risks... For better of for worse, that seems typical of me as a person - wanting to explore the unknowns. Scott Lake - a nice picnic and camping area which probably sees more people without a government shutdown and/or during the summer months Snow fell heavier as I left Scott Lake.
