June Lake Loop (10/13/2005)

It was mid morning by the time I arrived at June Lake Loop after the morning photoshoot at Mono Lake and an unsucessful trip to Parker Lake. The sun was already fairly high. I found the drive to be scenic, and perhaps more majestic than the drive to Lundy Canyon. However, it was similar for the most part. I did not find myself as excited as the previous day, being already saturated with the yellow and gold foliage. Following are the main things that stood out for me.
I found a few high contrast sections of the road where golden trees stood out against the shady mountainside, even at mid morning. I found these areas in the Grant Lake area. Also in the Grant Lake area, I found a grove of aspen in reddish hue instead of the more common yellow/golden color. I also climb down to the lakeshore and got a few shots of golden reflections off the lake. A nice bonus was having fly fishermen as models in the distance. However, they were too far away to see in screen-sized images.

The creek, Rush Creek I believe, was quite cold that morning. While most people were drawn to the colorful foliage on the side of the mountain, I went the reverse direction to the creek since I saw the still yellow aspen in the sunlight against the backdrop of a shady mountain. However, as I got to the creek, I found the mist coming up from the stream as the sun began to warm the creek water. In addition, the grass lining the creek was still covered by frost. This was one exciting moment for me.
I suppose that I was there at the wrong time of the day and did not get to see the breath taking views that many have seen. That’s a good excuse to camp there a couple of days one autumn in the future to capture the magic moments, or better yet, have someone giving me pointers about where and when to be.

I had a relaxing lunch at a picnic area on June Lake with very few people in the area. Then I had to get back on the road in order to get to my next destination – Bishop.
